Premier announces 50% increase in Queensland’s national park estate by 2020

In 2008 Queensland celebrates 100 years of green heritage. As part of these celebrations, the Premier has announced a 50% increase in Queensland’s national park estate by 2020.

Graph - Area of National Parks

‘National parks’ refers to land that has been gazetted as national park. There are rules about what can and can't happen on national parks land.


This graph shows how the area of national parks in Queensland has increased from nearly zero hectares in 1908, to 8.5 million hectares in 2008. By 2020 it is estimated that the area of national parks will be 12 million hectares.

Graph - Total Protected Area

‘Protected areas’ refers to land that is protected, but not to the same level as national parks. For example it includes forests, conservation areas and protected wetlands areas. The total protected area estate includes national parks.


This graph shows the total protected area of national parks in Queensland has increased from nearly zero hectares in 1908, to 8.5 million hectares in 2008. By 2020 it is estimated that the total protected area of national parks will be 20 million hectares.
