The 16th Bligh Government Community Cabinet was held at the Gold Coast on Sunday 5 and Monday 6 July 2009. It coincided with the 31st annual Gold Coast Marathon.

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project is now a reality following an agreement signed at Community Cabinet. Premier Anna Bligh was joined by Federal Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot and Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke to sign the agreement to jointly fund the $949 million project. It will generate 6,300 jobs and create the infrastructure the Gold Coast needs to thrive. The Queensland Government has committing $464 million to the light rail system which will extend from Griffith University to Broadbeach, including Southport and Surfers Paradise. It is expected to be up and running by January 2014.

At Community Cabinet, Premier Anna Bligh named Mieko Kobayashi as a Japanese tourism ambassador to the Gold Coast. Mieko has a cult-like following in Japan after being chosen as a finalist in Tourism Queensland's internationally acclaimed Best Job In The World campaign. A new jet ski to run dawn patrols from the Gold Coast Seaway to Miami has been named in honour of Mieko. The jet ski, sponsored by the Queensland Government and Tourism Queensland, was handed over to Surf Life Saving Queensland's Rescue Water Craft Advisor Col Neil. The Queensland Police Service's latest tool in the fight to reduce the road toll was unveiled at Community Cabinet. Four Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo high-visibility highway patrol cars carry the messages 'speed', 'seat belts', 'drink driving' and 'driving tired' as mobile reminders of the four biggest killers on Queensland's roads. Island caretaker Ben Southall was on the Gold Coast to promote and participate in the Asics Half Marathon. Ben is the successful applicant in Tourism Queensland's Best Job in the World promotion. Premier Anna Bligh sent a record field of runners on their way and then joined in the event herself.

Before attending Community Cabinet in the afternoon, Premier Anna Bligh was part of the record field which set off just after sunrise in the 21 kilometre Gold Coast half marathon. She equalled her personal best time of 2 hours 6 minutes. A record 23,398 people took part in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Asics Half Marathon, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Gold Coast Bulletin 5km Challenge and Queensland Health 4km and 2.25km Junior Dashes. Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan ran 1hour 55minutes in the half marathon while Deputy Premier Paul Lucas completed the 5km run and Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor the 10km run.

With marathon legends Yuko Arimori and Robert de Castella looking on, Minister for Sport Phil Reeves makes the presentation to Gold Coast Airport Marathon women's winner Lauren Shelley of Western Australia. Lauren who finished in 2:42:23, beat Queensland's Roxie Schmidt (left, number 59) by less than a second in the closest finish in race history.

Minister for Sport Phil Reeves congratulates Kenya's William Chebon Chebor on his win in the 31st Gold Coast Airport Men's Marathon. The 26-year-old Kenyan, running his first ever race over the gruelling 42.195 kilometre distance, won in a time of 2:12:00, the sixth fastest in race history.

Students will operate the ultra-modern centre as a small business enterprise, guided by their teachers and the local business community.
