Western Suburbs Community Cabinet
Photos from the 20th Bligh Government Community Cabinet, held in Brisbane's western suburbs on 29-30 November 2009.
Held at Forest Lake State High School, the event was well attended by locals optimistic about their future and keen to work together to help create that future.

Before the start of Community Cabinet at Forest Lake, Premier Anna Bligh and Transport Minister Rachel Nolan inspected progress on Stage 1 of the $800 million Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor. Now 60 per cent complete, it includes construction of a 4.5-kilometre passenger railway line from Darra to a new station at Richlands that is due to open in 2011.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace and Federal Member for Oxley Bernie Ripoll cut the ribbon at the commissioning of the $255 million federally-funded interchange. The interchange will link the Ipswich and Logan motorways.

Community Cabinet was off to a healthy start with a "Find Your 30" walk around Forest Lake. The walk was led by Minister for Sport and Minister for Child Safety Phil Reeves and Minister for Community Services and Member for Algester Karen Struthers.

Premier Anna Bligh and Professor Peter Spearritt, Director of the Centre for the Government of Queensland at the University of Queensland launched queenslandplaces.com.au (non-government link). The online database is a great educational resource for teachers, students, family historians or anyone interested in the history, culture and ongoing development of Queensland's settlements.
It is the first of its kind in Australia and covers all cities, towns, suburbs and villages in Queensland that have had populations of 500 or more.

A new $10.2 million substation at Wacol South was officially opened by Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Stephen Robertson. He is pictured with Shane Margetts commissioning coordinator of the project. The station will help to power 1,300 business and industry customers in western Brisbane.

Ipswich State High School Year 10 student Tegan McDonald shaves off the "Movember" of Member for Ipswich Wayne Wendt while teacher Deborah Whyatt and student Jackie Kracht cut the hair of Minister for Education Geoff Wilson at Ipswich State High School's Hair & Beauty Training Salon. The school, which operates a hair and beauty salon in Ipswich's CBD, is the first in Australia to deliver a retail service to the general public as part of its education program.

As Minister for Community Services and Housing and Minister for Women as well as being the local member, Karen Struthers had a very busy afternoon of deputations. She is pictured with Deidre Doherty, Inala Family and Accommodation Support Service Inc and Tracey Edgar (secretary) and Glenda Haig (president) of Westside Business Women Inc. Deidre was there to talk about homelessness issues in Inala. Tracey and Glenda briefed the Minister on the role their group is playing in supporting and empowering business women in the western corridor.

Queensland Paracyclist of the Year (LC4) Lydia Tabe, pictured with Merv Greenhill was one of a bevy of sports stars at the Forest Lake "Find Your 30" Day. Lydia, hospitalised for 6 months after a serious car accident, was talked into taking up cycling by Merv and now has her sights set on qualifying for the London Paralympics in 2012.
